Biology

What is biology?  Biology is the study of life.  The study of biology started with the prehistoric people in an order to survive, wondering if something was edible to eat was their main concern.  Since that time it has evolved as an essential discipline to the human race. Over the last two hundred years our knowledge on the subject has evolved greatly.  Charles Darwin helped the discipline with his study of origins of life.  John Needham was important in studying bacteria.  In 1665, Robert Hooke was the first person to see and name cells. Many more important scientists have added to biology and contributed to what it is today.

Business

What is business? It is an organization operated with the objective of making a profit from the sale of goods or services.  Business has existed from the beginning of time and is how human beings get along on the earth and survive amongst each other. Trading was the earliest types of business.  People would come and trade goods for other goods, this is how specialization started.  A family would become proficient for example, in raising chickens; another family would become proficient in making blankets these families could benefit each other by trading.  Business is now much more complex and the best businesses today are those that can make the most profit with a certain amount of resources.  Evolution favors the survival of the fittest. Organizational fitness requires increasing efficiency, responsiveness, and adaptability at all levels of the organization these are the key issues of the concept of business.

The reason I chose these two areas of concentration started more than five years ago. I was never the best student and one of the first courses I took in college was a biology 181 course, I did extremely well because I enjoyed the course.  I have taken biology courses almost every semester since that time and have enjoyed the subject thoroughly.  My fascination with business came much sooner than that of biology.  My father was has always been in business and spoke much of it around our house I realized the application of business very young and understood its importance.  I have been told numerous times throughout my life that I have a good business sense and that I should pursue the field.  My love of biology and my natural sense of the business world has led me to choose these two fields of study as my concentration areas.  Biology and business can be related to each other in many ways.  Biology is an essential area of knowledge for the human race, it helps us understand how to survive and stay healthy.  Biologists share their knowledge with the human race and help them to survive, human beings find this knowledge valuable and thus businesses are formed around this knowledge, and are used as business. I hope that through my interdisciplinary study of these two subjects I can learn to be a better rounded and efficient business person. If I can understand how to be a proficient in my knowledge of biology I will be a better business person.  My future profession as a dentist and small business owner will benefit greatly from this interdisciplinary study. I will have a great knowledge of how my patient’s body works and also knowledge on how to treat my patients to have a successful business.

Biology & Business Courses
General Biology
In my first Biology course at the college level I learned the basics of biology. This was a refresher course of what was breifly taught in high school biology.  This class perked my interest in the biology field; I always looked forward to going to class.

General Biology 2

This was one of the harder Biology classes I have taken. I learned about taxonomy and about many different species of plants and animals and how they are classified.

Anatomy & Physiology 1

In this course I was taught the anatomy of the human body and how the parts of the human body function. This Biology class was the easiest to relate to and I learned very useful information from it.

Developmental Biology

This was a fascinating course that explores the development of living things; however, it mostly focused on humans.  I was able to learn about Bioethics and some of the latest technology involved in biology today.

Ecology and Evolution

This course explored ecosystems and how they effect plant and animal life.  I now have a better understanding of how everything on earth coexists and relates to each other. I also learned about ethical and controversial topics that relate to the biology world.

Business Management

In this general course I learned pretty much everything under the sun about how to manage a business.  We explored large and small businesses and the keys to successful management of business. It was a very worthwhile class that has been an asset to me in the remainder of my schooling and I am sure will help me in the workforce.

Personal Finance

This course taught me how to manage my personal finances.  I learned about taxes, insurance, stocks, real estate, interest, loans, savings and much more.  I feel this course should be a requisite for any degree seeking student.

Real Estate

This course taught me the "in’s and out’s" of the real estate world.  I learned the three most important words in real estate are location, location, and location. I learned about loans and paperwork, property laws and restrictions, and how to be successful in real estate.

Economics

This was a class that at first, I thought would be very boring but was probably the least boring business class that I took.  I learned that it takes more than common sense to be a smart economist.  To view the economy intelligently, much study is required and much application of knowledge is required.  Experience is very important if one is to be successful in economics and one must be able to learn from others mistakes.

Marketing

This was a great class and was a joy to be a part of.  I enjoyed exploring the many different successful people and businesses in marketing from “got milk” to “army strong” to “nike”. This was a fascinating course that taught me much about how to be successful in marketing.  It also taught me the importance marketing has in becoming a successful businessperson.
